What to Know

Critics Consensus

Alien: Covenant delivers another satisfying round of close-quarters deep-space terror, even if it doesn't take the saga in any new directions.

Alien: Covenant | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Karen Han Slashfilm Even if the twists and turns in the plot aren't too hard to see coming, there's a distinct joy that [Ridley] Scott takes in setting up and setting off each of those traps. Rated: 8/10 Dec 8, 2017 Full Review Alien: Covenant | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Kristen Lopez Culturess Covenant works best when it's honoring Alien and massively fails when it hearkens back to Prometheus. Nov 20, 2017 Full Review Alien: Covenant | Rotten Tomatoes (3) K. Austin Collins The Ringer There's an air of mystery to Alien: Covenant that the movie can't live up to, because for all its interest in what it all means, it has relatively little to show for all that idle questioning. Jun 22, 2023 Full Review Alien: Covenant | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “Prometheus” was too big of a departure for some die-hard fans. “Covenant” tries to lure them back with good action and effects while still giving time to Scott’s philosophical ruminations and mythology building. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 19, 2022 Full Review Alien: Covenant | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson The non-human is the most interesting character and the one who runs the show. "Alien: Covenant" is undoubtedly owned and defined by the multi-layered behavior traits conveyed by the headlining Michael Fassbender. Rated: 4/5 Jun 26, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Aidan B Visuals are nothing short of jaw dropping, and the cinematography is absolutely stellar. The action and horror were also done fairly well, though the expendable characters never really made me care what would happen to them. Speaking of the characters, these were by far the absolute worst in the franchise; I never really cared for any of them and each and every one of them constantly makes terrible decisions throughout that are just bafflingly stupid. I also felt that this movie ruined a lot of the setup that Prometheus (I film that I actually really enjoyed) had going for it. In the end, I thought "Alien: Covenant" was a gorgeous and enjoyable at parts movie, though is a really big letdown when considering what preceded it. Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/22/24 Full Review Nate A May be the worst of the franchise. Which is saying something. Feels like a plot written by ChatGPT with the instructions to be as predictable generic as possible. Even if you've never seen any of the other Alien movies, you will know exactly what happens next every step of the way because this is derivative storytelling at it's stalest. There's not a single original thought here. Even the CGI is pretty bad by modern standards. And I know we should be forgiving of sci-fi allowances, but there are lot--A LOT--of science and physics sins in this one. I think the most entertaining part of this was seeing McBride (mostly) out of his usual typecasting. Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/17/24 Full Review Tim S Once again we are forced to endure a military style expeditionary force that seems unaware of microscopic vectors. It is about as frustrating as it gets in this one. And once the damage is done and monsters start chewing and bleeding and impregnating, we are likewise subjected to shrieks and unprofessional performance FROM AN INTERSTELLAR colonizing SPACE ship. COME ON!!! Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/16/24 Full Review Pedro Henrique C Did I say that in all the next films in this franchise evil will win? Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/15/24 Full Review Michael C This would have been a fairly decent movie but the casting was poor; especially the dreadfully weak lead actress who detracted greatly from the entire movie. Michael Fassbender was, as ever, excellent - he holds the movie together almost single handedly. Visuals as good as they always are with Ridley Scott at the helm. A bit much weight put on one quote from P.B.Shelley. Definitely worth watching.
