Douglas Craig Sjoerdsma Sr. age 59, rode into the arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, June 20, 2024. Doug loved his family with amazing selflessness, only surpassed by his love for the Lord. He was an active member at Bethany URC where he served as a deacon, elder, and did volunteer/mission work. Doug was an avid bicyclist belonging to a group of Christian brothers, RWAM. He had a passion for sharing the good news of salvation and continually looked for opportunities on bike rides and in everyday life. He enjoyed music, singing, videography, fishing, playing sports, and vacationing/game nights with family. Doug worked 33 years at Gordon Food Service. He then had the special task of driving a bus for Grandville Public Schools. “Mr. Doug” was loved by the kids on his bus and he loved each one of them. His desire was for them to know Christ as their Savior.
Doug will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 35 years, Sherri; his children, Douglas (Julie), Anna (Travis) Moelker, and Mark (Katelyn); his grandchildren, Silas, Emma, Judah, and James, respectively.
Doug is survived by his brother, Tom (Heidi) Sjoerdsma; half-brother and half-sister, Don (Helen) Dieleman, and Sandra (Roger) Warren; step-mother, Hennie; step-brother and step-sisters, Tom (Teresa) Waterloo, Karen DeVille, Amy (Dave) Barber; father-in-law, Mitch (Betsy) Dykstra; brothers and sisters-in-law, Sue (Al) Steenwyk, Mick (Luanne) Dykstra, Steve (Joni) Dykstra, Joel (Kelly) Dykstra; as well as many loving nieces, nephews, and lifelong friend, Jon Ymker.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Art Sjoerdsma and A. Jeanne Sjoerdsma; mother-in-law, Joyce Dykstra; and brother-in-law, Jeff DeVille. Doug would want you to consider, “Where will you spend eternity? If you were to die today, do you know Jesus as your Lord and Savior?” Philippians 1:21, “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”
Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Thursday, June 27, 2024 at Bethany United Reformed Church, 5401 Byron Center Ave. SW, Wyoming, with Rev. Eric Van Der Molen and Rev. Casey Freswick officiating. Burial will take place at Georgetown Township Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit with the family Wednesday, June 26, from 2-4 and 5:30-8 pm at Bethany United Reformed Church. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Biblical Counseling Worldwide for David and Mary Meengs, PO Box 547, Caledonia, MI 49316.

Sherri, Judy and I want to express our love and support for you and your family in this time of mourning the loss of you husband, father and friend. Dougs love for his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Chist, was so evident in how he lived his life and is now being proclaimed in his death. May God's grace sustain you and His love surround you as you grieve. Be assured of our continued prayers for you as God brings you to our minds. Matthew 11:28-2928 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls."

So sad to hear of your loss. I knew Doug from our daily chats at the school bus as I dropped off one of my students each afternoon. Doug was always smiling, and so encouraging to his entire bus of students. He had a gift and everyone who met him knew he was special. We were all blessed to have known him. He will forever be “Mr.Doug” our favorite bus driver. Lots of love and prayers to your family- you are so lucky to have been loved by him.

Sherri, I am so sorry. Praying that you feel the loving arms of Jesus wrapped around you and your family as you grieve this tremendous loss. Praying you can cherish the gift he was and find comfort knowing you will one day see him again. Revelation 21:4 "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."Jim and Michelle Krul

My mother was driving the vehicle and I just wanted to say I am beyond sorry for this family’s loss. My heart breaks for you all and I wish it wouldn’t have happened. No family deserves this and I am praying for you all. There are no words to describe how terrible I feel about this.

This makes my heart hurt. I’m a 2016 survivor of a bicycle/car crash and I was on my the bike. This is terrifying for any family. My prayers go out for the family.

Worked with Doug at gfs for some years and loved talking about god with him. Love how he always wrote scripture on a post it note and put it on his Hilo. Would always look forward to seeing his scripture for the day. I pray that god comforts the family in this hard time.
