Toys R Us Credit Card Review

4.1 / 5

  • Two offers, one application. As is the case with many retailers, there are two Toys R Us credit cards: the Toys R Us Mastercard and the Toys R Us Store Card, which can only be used to make Toys R Us purchases. You generally need good or excellent credit to get the Mastercard but only fair credit to get the store-only version. You can check your credit score for free on WalletHub to get a sense of which offer you’re likely to get approved for. But it really shouldn’t matter at the end of the day, as both cards are best (and equally rewarding) for Toys R Us purchases.

  • Treacherous choice to start. Whether you get approved for the Mastercard or the store-only alternative, you will be confronted with a decision upon opening your Toys R Us card account. Do you want 15% off your first purchase the day of account opening or “special financing” if that purchase totals $299+? Fortunately, this is an easy choice: Go with the discount. After all, Toys R Us credit cards have a feature called deferred interest, which means a high regular APR can retroactively apply to your entire original purchase amount if you’re late with a monthly bill payment or you don’t repay your full balance by the end of the special-financing period. All store credit cards that offer 0% intro rates use this same feature, so if you want a card to help you minimize the cost of big-ticket purchases, go with a general-purpose 0% credit card.

  • Great “R Us” rewards. Both Toys R Us credit cards give you 2 points per $1 spent at Toys R Us and Babies R Us. That works out to 8% cash back, considering 125 points are worth $5 in store credit. You’ll also get 10% off purchases made on Thursdays (pretty sweet!) and up to 10% back on items bought from your Babies R Us registry, if applicable. The only thing the Toys R Us Mastercard gives you that the store card does not is 1 point for every $4 spent elsewhere. That’s 1% back, which is about what you’d get from the average rewards credit card.

  • High interest rate. Both Toys R Us credit cards have an APR, which is well above the market averages for store cards (25.26%) and credit cards for people with fair credit (22.34%), according to WalletHub’s latest Credit Card Landscape Report. So it’s not a good idea to carry a balance from month to month.

  • No annual fee, but watch out abroad. Neither Toys R Us card charges an annual fee, which saves you about $15.55 per year relative to the average credit card (though it doesn’t really set the pair apart from other store-affiliated credit cards). That’s the good news. The bad news, if you get the Mastercard, is you shouldn’t use it to make purchases abroad or to buy things from internationally based merchants. That’s because it charges a 3% foreign-transaction fee. And getting a card without such a fee will enable you to save up to 11% on currency conversion, according to WalletHub research.

Yes, you can use your Toys R Us Credit Card anywhere Mastercard is accepted. However, it is worth noting that this card was discontinued a while back.

If you're looking for a similar credit card, you should consider getting the Amazon Credit Card. This card can be used anywhere Visa is accepted. Plus, it offers 1 - 5 points per $1 spent on purchases. The card's annual fee is $0 and you need at least good credit to get approved.

@WalletHub

Toys R Us Credit Card applicants needed good credit or better (a credit score of 700+) to qualify. And the Toys R Us Store Card required fair credit or better (a credit score of 640+) for approval. These cards are no longer available to new applicants, because Toys R Us filed for bankruptcy.

If you have good credit, it's definitely worth checking out some of the best credit cards for good credit and pick one based on your individual needs. Conversely, if you had your sights set on...

I would not recommend any credit card from Synchrony Bank ever. They will lower your credit limit on you quickly. I used 50% of my credit limit and they dropped my credit limit below what I owed hurting my score.

Great card with no monthly fees. Started out as a card I used to get my baby what he needed and now it’s nice to have as spending since toys r us closed.

Account was paid, and seems like it should state "paid", not just closed. It was closed, when the company went out of business. The company should give me the best benefit of the credit report. My account was in good standing, and it should reflect that in the reporting.

This company is a complete fraud. I\'ve tried to pay my balance 3X now and it returns my payment with an additional late fee citing some lame reason it would not go through. I pay all my bills in full and on time. Buyers looking for the discount beware, they will make it back through finance charges!

Terrible service overall, high interest, no flexibility. They charge $27 late fee immediately, and their auto-pay system doesn't quite work. Nightmare of a card. The card also doesn't link directly with the store accounts, so need to manually enter phone number or email every time a purchase is made to get points.

They cancel your orders even if you have the credit to purchase them and respond to their fraud texts that they are valid charges. Very unhappy with the fact that I am no longer getting an item for an agreed to price and both companies have no worries about it!

Majorly regretting getting this card.. was told that a late fee would be assessed on Friday if my payment was not received.. ( it is Wednesday..) And just got an email saying a late fee had been assessed. I have had lots of issues with this card and have only spoken with 1 "nice/personable" representative at this company. I have 2 other credit cards with different companies and have 0 issues with them but this one is horrible.. The 10% lure is what got me being a single Mom.. Paying it off asap and never using it again..
